The Kenmore dryer power cord has to match the outlet in your wall, and that is the step most new installations get wrong. An electric dryer runs on 240 volts and uses either a three-prong cord for an older three-wire outlet or a four-prong cord for a newer four-wire outlet. The dryer’s terminal block must be wired to match, including one small link between neutral and ground that stays on for a three-wire hookup and comes off for a four-wire one. Many dryers are sold without a cord, so you may need to buy the right one. Switch the breaker off before you touch anything.

Three-prong (three-wire)Two hot wires and one combined neutral and ground. Found in older homes. The neutral-ground link stays connected.
Four-prong (four-wire)Two hot wires, a separate neutral and a separate ground. Standard in newer homes. The neutral-ground link is removed.

Which power cord does your Kenmore dryer need?

Look at the outlet first, not the dryer. Switch the breaker off, then look at the receptacle on the wall. A four-prong outlet has four slots: two angled hot slots, one straight slot for neutral and a round or U-shaped one for ground. A three-prong outlet has three slots, with no separate ground. The cord on the dryer must have the same number of prongs and the same shape as the outlet, because the two are not interchangeable.

If your outlet is a three-prong type and your home is wired accordingly, use a three-prong cord. If the outlet is a four-prong type, use a four-prong cord. Do not change the outlet type yourself, and never cut or file a plug to make it fit. If you are unsure, have an electrician look at it.

Kenmore dryers come from different builders: the 110 prefix is Whirlpool-built and the 796 prefix is LG-built, with others from Amana. The terminal block looks slightly different on each, so use the installation sheet for your own prefix and do not borrow instructions from another brand. Our Kenmore model number decoder explains how to read the tag.

On an electric dryer, the cabinet is bonded to the neutral terminal with a small strap or wire at the terminal block. That link makes sense on a three-wire hookup, where the neutral wire doubles as the ground. It is dangerous on a four-wire hookup, because it would join neutral to ground, so current can flow on the metal cabinet. The rule is simple: three-wire connection keeps the link, four-wire connection removes it.

The installation sheet shows where the link sits on your dryer and how to move it. It is a small step with a big consequence, which is why so many installers check it twice.

How do you connect the cord safely?

  1. Switch the breaker off and confirm the power is dead. Do not rely on the dryer’s own switch.
  2. Open the terminal cover on the back of the dryer. It is usually held by one screw.
  3. Fit the strain relief in the knockout so that the cord cannot be pulled out of the terminal.
  4. Set the neutral-ground link to match your outlet: kept for three-wire, removed for four-wire.
  5. Connect the wires to the terminals as the installation sheet shows. The two hot wires go to the outer terminals, the neutral goes to the center and the ground goes to the ground screw on a four-wire cord.
  6. Tighten every terminal screw firmly. A loose connection heats up, melts the terminal and starts failures that look like random dryer faults.
  7. Close the cover, push the dryer back without crushing the cord or the vent, then restore power.

The cord must be rated for the dryer, which means a 30-amp rating on most electric models, so check the label on the cord and in the sheet. If anything looks scorched, loose or undersized, stop and call an electrician.

What if the dryer has no power or no heat after installation?

A new connection can fail in a few ways, and each has a clear sign:

  • Completely dead. The breaker has tripped, the cord is not seated, or the terminal wiring is loose. Check the breaker first, and see our Kenmore dryer no power page for the symptom.
  • The drum turns but there is no heat. This is the classic sign of a dryer that is getting only half of its 240 volts. One leg of the double-pole breaker may have tripped, or one hot wire is loose at the terminal block. The motor runs on the remaining 120 volts, but the heater needs both.
  • The breaker trips when you start the dryer. A wiring error, a wrong cord or a fault in the dryer itself. Our guide to a Kenmore appliance tripping the breaker explains how to separate them.
  • The dryer will not start. Work through the steps in Kenmore dryer will not start.

When should you call a professional?

Call an electrician if the outlet does not match any cord, if the wiring looks damaged or if you are not sure what is in the wall. Call our technicians if the dryer shows a fault after a correct connection. Our Kenmore dryer repair team will test the supply, the terminal block and the heater. We are an independent repair company, not a factory service arm, and we will tell you when a repair is not worth doing. You can book a visit and tell us what kind of outlet you have.

Frequently asked questions
Does a Kenmore dryer come with a power cord?
Many electric dryers are sold without one, so you may need to buy a three-prong or four-prong cord that matches your outlet. Check the box and the installation sheet.
Can I use a three-prong cord on a four-prong outlet?
No. The cord must match the outlet. Buy the correct cord rather than altering the plug or the outlet.
Why does my new dryer run but not heat?
The heater needs both hot legs of the 240-volt supply. If one leg is lost, from a half-tripped breaker or a loose terminal, the drum still turns but nothing heats.
What is the neutral-ground link?
It is a small strap at the terminal block. Keep it for a three-wire connection and remove it for a four-wire connection. Follow the installation sheet.
When should I call a professional?
Call an electrician if the outlet or wiring is doubtful, or a technician if the dryer shows a fault after a correct hookup. You can book a visit online.
