The Physical Cause: Element, Fuse, or Igniter
On electric dryers, the heating element is a coiled wire that heats air as it is pulled through the drum, and it can burn out from age just like a light bulb filament. A thermal fuse is a one-time safety device that blows if the dryer overheats, most often because of restricted airflow, and once blown it must be replaced rather than reset. On gas dryers, a bad igniter simply fails to spark, so the burner never lights even though the drum still tumbles normally.
Whirlpool-Built Kenmore Dryers (110 Prefix)
If your model number starts with 110 — common examples include 110C64852301, 110C71492310, and 110C60222511 — your dryer was built by Whirlpool, and a heating problem on these units is most often confirmed by an F1 or F01 code, which points to an internal short in the main control relay or a control-board failure. Unplugging the dryer for five minutes and inspecting the wiring harness can sometimes clear a transient F1/F01, but a repeat occurrence usually means the control board needs replacing.
LG-Built Kenmore Dryers (796 Prefix)
If your model starts with 796, LG built it, and heating problems on these units are more often tied to a tE thermistor error code, which means the sensor reading drum temperature has failed or lost its signal. A tE code can sometimes be cleared by unplugging the dryer and holding Start/Pause for five seconds, but a recurring code points to the thermistor itself needing replacement.
Ruling Out Airflow First
Before assuming a part inside the dryer has failed, it is worth ruling out a restricted vent, since a badly clogged duct can trip a thermal fuse or overheat protection and look identical to a failed heating element. LG-built units will often show this directly as a d90 or d95 vent-blockage code rather than a heating problem at all, and the non-digital equivalent on any dryer is a load that takes noticeably multiple cycles to dry.
Other Possible Causes
Occasionally a heating complaint has nothing to do with the element, fuse, or igniter at all, and instead traces back to the household power supply or gas supply itself — an electric dryer heating element needs both legs of its 240-volt circuit to be live, so a single blown fuse in the home’s breaker panel can leave the dryer tumbling with no heat while everything else in the house works normally. On gas models, a closed gas shutoff valve produces the same symptom and is worth checking before assuming the igniter itself has failed.
