TL;DR: Kenmore washer installation involves connecting supply hoses correctly, removing all shipping bolts, leveling the machine, and confirming the drain standpipe height - skipping any of these often causes noise or leak issues later.

Kenmore washer installation is straightforward, but a handful of steps get skipped more often than you would expect, and each one tends to cause a service call within the first few months. Whether your new washer was built by Whirlpool, LG, or another OEM under the Kenmore name, the installation basics below apply across the lineup.

Connecting the supply hoses

  • Use new hoses rather than reusing old ones – rubber hoses degrade over time and are a common source of leaks
  • Connect hot to hot and cold to cold; a crossed connection will not damage the washer but can cause poor wash results
  • Hand-tighten the hose connections, then give a quarter turn with pliers – overtightening can strip the fitting
  • Turn on the water supply and check both connections for drips before starting a first cycle

Removing shipping bolts

This is the single most commonly missed step. Every new washer ships with bolts or rods that lock the drum in place during transport, and if they are not removed, the washer will vibrate violently and can damage itself during the first spin cycle. Check your owner’s manual for the exact bolt locations on the back panel, remove all of them (there are usually four), and keep them in case you ever move the washer again.

Leveling the washer

  1. Place a bubble level on top of the washer, checking both front-to-back and side-to-side
  2. Adjust the leveling feet at the bottom corners until the washer sits flat and does not rock when pushed
  3. Tighten the locknuts against the cabinet once level to keep the feet from shifting

A washer that is not level is far more likely to trigger an unbalanced-load code during spin – see our guide on the kenmore washer ue code for what that looks like on LG-built models.

Drain standpipe height

The drain hose should empty into a standpipe that sits between roughly 30 and 96 inches off the floor, per most manufacturer installation instructions, with the hose inserted no more than a few inches into the pipe to maintain a proper air gap and prevent siphoning. A standpipe that is too short or too tall can cause the washer to drain poorly or siphon water continuously during the wash.

When to call a professional

If your new installation involves relocating water lines, adding a standpipe, or you are simply not confident handling the hose and leveling work yourself, our washer repair technicians handle new installations as well as repairs. This is also a good time to review Kenmore washer not draining, since a poorly installed standpipe is a preventable cause of drain complaints down the road.

A note on new-installation warranty coverage

Because a proper kenmore washer installation is what prevents most early-life problems – vibration from leftover shipping bolts, unbalanced-load codes from an unlevel machine, or drain issues from a bad standpipe height – it is worth having the installation itself checked if you inherited a washer that was installed by someone else, or if problems started shortly after a move. A quick inspection of hoses, bolts, and leveling feet takes only a few minutes and rules out the most common preventable causes before any deeper diagnostic work begins.

Quick summary

Getting the hose connections, shipping bolts, leveling, and standpipe height right at the start prevents the large majority of early service calls on a new washer, regardless of which OEM built the unit under the Kenmore name, and taking the extra ten minutes to do each step properly is far cheaper than the service call it can prevent later.
