To do a Kenmore oven reset, turn the oven or range off at the breaker panel for about five minutes, switch the power back on and see whether the display and the code clear. That power reset is the one owner-level step our guides give for these ovens, but what a code means and whether a reset is even appropriate depends on who built your oven, because Kenmore ovens and ranges are made by different manufacturers with different controls. This how-to explains the reset in order, why the builder matters, which codes should not simply be reset, and what to do when the code returns. It does not describe button sequences for individual models, because they differ; use your owner’s manual for those.

Whirlpool-built (665 prefix)Temperature sensor failure reads as F3E0 or F3E1; F1 is a failed control board
GE-builtF0, F1, F6 and F7 group reports a keypanel problem
Do notReset an F10 again and again, or open the control panel

How do you reset a Kenmore oven or range control?

  1. Cancel any cooking and turn the oven off from the panel. Let the oven cool if it was hot.
  2. Find the breaker for the oven or range at the household panel and switch it off. Do this standing on a dry floor.
  3. Wait about five minutes so that the control fully powers down.
  4. Switch the breaker back on. The display will usually flash or ask you to set the clock.
  5. Set the clock as your owner’s manual describes, and run a short test, such as a bake at a low temperature, to see if the code returns.

The exact steps for clearing a displayed code or holding a cancel key differ by model. Check the owner’s manual for your model number rather than guessing at button combinations. If you do not have the manual, look up the model number on our Kenmore model number decoder page, which explains how to read the tag.

Why does the builder of your oven matter for a reset?

Kenmore has never been a factory. Our guides explain that the first three digits of the model number show who built the oven, and each builder uses its own control and its own code table. On the Frigidaire-built ranges (790 and 970 prefixes), our F10 page says the oven control has detected a runaway temperature, and our F11 page says a shorted or stuck key on the touch panel. On a Whirlpool-built range (665 prefix), a temperature sensor failure reads as F3E0 or F3E1 and F1 means a failed control board. On a GE-built Kenmore, the F0, F1, F6 and F7 group reports a keypanel problem. The same characters can mean different things, so match the prefix before you decide a reset will help.

Which codes should you not simply reset?

Treat F10 as a safety code. Our Kenmore range F10 error code guide says the control has detected the oven temperature climbing well past its setpoint, that this is a safety problem and not a nuisance code, and that you should stop using the oven until it has been checked. One breaker reset to see whether it clears is reasonable. If the code comes back within a few cycles, leave the oven off and call a technician. Do not run a self-clean cycle while F10 is unresolved, because our guide says that pushes the oven to its highest temperatures and can make an intermittent fault worse.

The temperature probe codes F30 and F31 on the Frigidaire-built platform (open and shorted probe) also will not fix themselves; our F30 and F31 guide says the oven will typically refuse to complete a bake at all, and that repeatedly resetting the breaker rarely resolves the underlying probe or wiring problem. On a Whirlpool-built oven, see the F3E0 and F3E1 codes guide.

What if the keys or display will not respond?

Our F11 guide explains that on a Frigidaire-built range a membrane touch panel can read a key as held down because of moisture, grease or a cracked trace. That looks like a range that beeps by itself, cancels a bake partway or will not accept any input. The owner-level steps are limited: clear the power, and see which key seems to stick. With the oven off and cool, you can wipe the panel gently with a soft cloth, but do not spray cleaner onto it or let liquid run behind it. The panel sits over high-voltage terminals, so do not remove the back or the panel yourself.

What if the oven shows no code but still misbehaves?

A reset cannot fix a worn element or a bad probe that shows no code. For an oven that does not heat or heats unevenly, work through our oven not heating diagnostics and oven not heating evenly guides. If the oven is gas, any smell of gas means leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside; do not use switches or try to reset anything.

When should you call a technician?

Call when a code returns after a power reset, when the keys or display stay dead, when the oven overheats or when you see smoke or a burning smell. For smoke or flames, keep the door closed, switch the breaker off and call 911. Our Kenmore oven repair and range repair technicians confirm the builder, test the probe, keypad and board, and replace only what has failed. We are an independent repair company, not a factory service arm. Have the model number and the exact code ready, and book a visit.

Frequently asked questions
How do I reset my Kenmore oven?
Switch the oven’s breaker off for about five minutes, switch it back on and set the clock. Check your owner’s manual for model-specific steps.
Can I reset an F10 code on a Kenmore stove?
You can try one breaker reset, but F10 is a runaway temperature safety code on Frigidaire-built models. If it returns, stop using the oven and call a technician.
Why does my Kenmore oven show F11?
On a Frigidaire-built Kenmore, F11 means a shorted or stuck key on the touch panel. Clear the power and see which key sticks; a persistent F11 needs a technician.
Will a reset fix a Kenmore oven that will not heat?
Not by itself. A bad element or probe needs testing. See our not heating diagnostics.
Who can help if the reset does not work?
A technician. Book a visit.
