Kenmore oven error codes cannot be read from the code alone, because the same code means different things depending on which company built the oven. An F7 is a relay-test or memory failure on a Frigidaire-built range, and a keypanel fault on a GE-built one. An F5 is a power supply failure on one, a door latch problem on another and a control board replacement on a third. Find the first three digits of your model number, work out the builder, and only then look up the code.
Why do Kenmore oven error codes mean different things?
Kenmore does not make ovens. It sells ranges and wall ovens built by other manufacturers, and each manufacturer wrote its own fault code list for its own control board. The codes were never meant to line up, so a code that looks identical on two Kenmore ovens can describe unrelated faults. That is why searching a bare code, or reading a list written for another brand’s range, sends people to the wrong part.
The fix is simple. Ignore the nameplate that says Kenmore and look at the model number instead, because its first three digits identify the builder. Our guide to Kenmore error codes by model prefix explains the same idea for washers, dryers and dishwashers.
How do you find out who built your Kenmore oven?
The model number is on a rating tag, usually on the frame behind the oven door, inside the storage drawer or on the side of a wall oven cavity. It starts with three digits followed by a period, such as 790.xxxxx. Our site ties the prefixes to builders like this:
- Frigidaire or Electrolux-built: 253, 336, 417, 587, 622, 628, 719, 790, 791 and 970. The Kenmore Pro ranges in the 790 series fall here.
- Whirlpool-built: 106, 110, 198, 664, 665 and 850. The 665 wall ovens and combination units on our model list fall here.
- GE-built: 362, 363 and 464. These are comparatively rare, so check the prefix before you assume.
If your tag does not match, use our Kenmore model number decoder to read it.

What do the codes mean on a Whirlpool-built Kenmore oven?
These use an F number followed by an E number, such as F3E0, and the pair is read together.
For the sensor pair, see our guide on Kenmore oven F3E0 and F3E1.
What do the codes mean on a Frigidaire-built Kenmore oven?
Frigidaire-built ranges and ovens use a plain F number, and some older units show a shorter form of the same code.
Three of these have their own guides: F10, F11 and F30 and F31. For the others, see our pages on the Frigidaire F7 and Frigidaire F5.
What do the codes mean on a GE-built Kenmore oven?
GE-built units are the least common, and their codes read differently again. Our pages list these meanings: F0, F1, F6 or F7 point to the keypanel, a stuck key or shorted keypad circuit; F2 or F20 means the oven exceeded a safety temperature; F3 or F4 means the oven sensor needs replacing; F5, F8 or FF means the electronic control board needs replacement; F9 or FC points to a door-lock circuit component; and F350 is an upper cooling fan circuit issue. Two messages are not faults: LOC means child lockout is on, and Bad Line means power is reaching the oven but the wiring is incorrect. See the page for F0, F1, F6 and F7 for the keypanel family.
What can you safely do about an oven error code?
Write down the code and the model number, then cancel any cooking or cleaning. Switch the oven off at the breaker for about ten minutes and turn it back on. Many codes appear after a power event or a cleaning cycle, and a reset clears a one-off. If the same code returns right away, the fault is live and needs a technician. Never override a door lock or try to open a locked door by force during a cleaning cycle, and do not touch an element or relay yourself, since the oven runs on a 240-volt supply.
When should you call a technician?
Call when a code returns after the reset, when the door stays locked, or when any temperature or relay code appears. Our Kenmore oven repair and Kenmore range repair technicians read the prefix, confirm the builder and test the part. We are an independent repair company, not a factory service arm, and we will tell you when a repair is not worth doing. You can book a visit with the model number and the exact code.
